About Works of Dirk van Lieshout
In this screening, we will present Dirk van Lieshout's works which varies from videoworks, drawings, installations, and models to performance based arts. Two different works and interactions in the public space will be projected. On one screen, "Frictional Mall" (2003) i.c.w. Jetske de Boer, we see a shopping mall area from a high angle, where his agents modulate the movement of the public by moving groups of shopping trolleys into their paths. The people's movements through the space are thus transformed into a kind of choreography.
The other projection, "Invisible" (2006), shows a series of video panoramas of the The Hague (Holland), where we are guided like an invisible VIP by six bodyguards. The work reflects to the current political situation in Holland where, for safety reasons, some politicians have constantly protection by bodyguards.
In the Third screening, van Lieshout presents "Waiting Room"(2004), which will transform the act of 'waiting' into an absurd product of the future.
Finally, One of his recent project is the mobile studio which he considers as instruments and tools to search the local surrounding. It reflects one of his main interest, the public space in relation to the individual, and he investigates the structures and hidden systems of the society which is dominated by among others commerce. The mobile studio
These works could be considered as visual exercises in articulating public spaces by appropriating existing codes or rules and employing them in a different context. Although these works were made in Holland, these spaces could almost be anywhere or any time in the globalized urban context of today.
