2009년 6월부터 2010년 1월까지, 다양한 실험적인 미디어기반 아티스트들의 작업을 발굴하여 릴레이 전시형태로 온/오프라인 시민들에게 소개함으로써 예술가들에겐 작품발표 기회의 제공 및 창작의욕을 높이고 시민들에겐 참신한 예술언어의 경험과 문화 다양성을 제공하고자 기획된 2009 신진작가 릴레이 쇼 프로젝트, 그 두 번째의 막이 열린다.

홍대 부근에 위치한 오프도시OFF℃에서 8월 4일에 시작해 8월 14일까지 이어지는 문명기의 <투발루 인 서울 프로젝트 _ 그 남자는 거기에 없었다.>展이 열린다. 문명기는 2007년 공공엘피(00LP)라는 프로젝트 그룹을 만들고 작가, 안무가, 배우, 무대디자이너 등과 협업을 통해 ‘투발루 인 서울’ 프로젝트를 골격으로 작업을 진행해 오고 있다. 서울과 투발루를 오가며 얻어지는 의미와 자료를 기반으로 시각화 작업을 하고 있는 그는 2009년 5월 두 번째 투발루 현지 체류를 마치고 현재 서울에서 작업을 진행 중에 있다. 이번에 오프도시에서 열리는 그의 상영회는 최근 을지로에서 행했던 거리 설치 상황극의 영상 상영회와 오프도시의 공간설치작업과 함께 이뤄진다.

‘우린 이곳에 영원히 머물 수 없어요.’ 잠시 이곳에서 먹고, 자고, 쉬고 또 무엇인가를 해내고 있을 뿐이죠. 우리에게 “우리는” 잠시 이 모든 것들을 멈추고 점심시간 배달시킨 음식을 기다리는 시간, 그뿐이에요. 그것은 마치 춤추는 것, 혹은 춤추지 않는 것, 때론 그냥 구경하는 것이죠. 우리는 그렇게 잠시, 이렇게 머물고, 기다리고 있는 것이지요! 이해 할 수 있겠어요? 이해하거나 이해 할 수  없다는, 그 말도 이해 할 수 없어요, 이상 하단 말이 이상한 것처럼! 우린 그냥 즐거운 점심을 즐기고 있지요. 말하자면 이것은 허무하고 상대적이지요. 역사적으로 본다면 우리의 “늦은 점심”은 기억의 의무가 다한 후 망각의 의무가 필요한

  전단지(찌라시)를 나눠주는 사람들, 개업집 앞 댄스 음악에 맞춰 춤추는 바람 풍선인형, 도로를 질주하는 배달 오토바이, 건물 복도에 내놓은 자장면 그릇, 거리에 빼곡한 광고문구들, 골목을 채우는 확성기 소리, 식당에서 흘러나오는 유행가등 을지로3가의 지역성을 바탕으로 재구성된 이야기. 경계에서 어긋나 있는 상황과 리듬에 반응하지 않는 즉흥 댄스, 머리와 배를 채우지 않는 배부름과 같은 극이다.

  그의 작업은 모든 전시공간에 대한 이해와 해석 그리고 관객과 어떠한 방법으로 접근하는가에 집중되어 왔다. 2007년 대안공간 미끌에 화이트 큐브 공간을 만들고 전시장 바닥 전체를 소금으로 채우고 선인장, 네온, 영상 등을 설치한 그의 첫 작업을 시작으로 그는 미디어를 통해 얻은 정보였던 ‘사라져가는 나라 투발루’를 서울에 상실, 사라짐과 대립시켜 시각화 했다. 투발루로 연결된 환경문제 이면의 다각적 접근을 요지로 하고 있는 그의 투발루 인 서울 프로젝트는 ‘편집된 세상을 비추는 미디어의 딜레마’, ‘광란적 생산, 소비로 연결된 자본주의 사회’, ‘탈 코드화되고 있는 서울의 정체성’, ‘망각의 의무가 작용하고 있는 집단의 기억’등의 잠재적 무의식을 수면위로 띄우기 위해 서울과 투발루의 이미지들이 몽타주 되고 있다.  다시 말해 ‘심리적 잠수병’에 걸린 서울에 투발루의 그림자를 드리우고 있는 듯하다.

  이렇듯 그의 투발루 인 서울 프로젝트가 환경운동, 저탄소 성장과 연결된 열쇠로는 열리지 않는 이유가 바로 거기에 있다. 그의 작업노트에서 말했듯 그의 작업은 허무하고 상대적인 우리의 현재 ‘상실’을 통해서 바라보는 우리의 실존에 대한 접근의 실험인 것이다. 다소 복잡한 구조를 가진 그의 프로젝트는 출판, 온라인 카페활동, 거리 퍼포먼스, 전시 등 다각적 시각화 작업을 통해 맥락을 교란 시키고 트렌드화 되는 작가의 창조적 상상력을 거부하는 일종의 반항이며 섬세한 사안에 접근해 가는 그의 태도를 엿볼 수 있다. 또한 ‘주상복합아파트 등반기’, ‘절망 시장’, ‘투발루 활주로에 설치한 텐트’, ‘상처 나지 않는 방’ 등을 통해 전개되는 사회의 쟁점들은 정치가나 사회운동가처럼 신랄하진 않지만 절망어린 익살스러움이 녹아 있다. 이번 설치, 상영회를 통해 현재까지 3년간 진행되어온 그의 실험이 어떠한 방법을 통해 가시화 되고 있는가를 확인할 수 있는 장이 마련되길 기대한다.

UndergroundArtChannel_2009 Relay Show_Project


▣ About the Project

  The "UAC_2009 Relay Show_Project" introduces to on/offline citizens the various artworks based on the experimental media art, which not only gives artists a chance to publish their works and inspire their creative activity but also to allow citizens to experience a new art language and cultural variety.  

  In addition, this project doesn't stop with the actual exhibit but builds up the system which publishes and distributes the resulting products from the exhibition through the production of DVD’s, CD’s, book, artworks, and so on. With this, artists receive economical feedback and spectators are encouraged to continue their interest in the works and artists even after the exhibit.

  Thirteen artists take part in this eight-month long project and show a variety of exhibition and results. Furthermore, we would like to establish an alternative system for publication and distribution of artworks, and search for various possibilities for this purpose. Finally, this project will be a meaningful experiment that is aimed at producing a more meaningful and effective communication between artists and the public, and therefore be a way to survival for the artists.  

▣ About the Undergroundartchannel(UAC)
Undergroundartchannel started as Web_Vol.1, the space of experimenting media and personal communication of art in January, 2005. From June, 2006, new version of Undergrounartchannel Vol.2, the archive project & the online networker for artists who experiment on media and produce art languages, has showed the irregular screening and exhibition project started from OFF_0℃ in Space Cell in 2006 and was followed by OFF_ +0℃ in Arario Gallery, Beijing, OFF_ 1℃ in Dao Space in 2007 and OFF_2℃ in Alternative-mediative space Minari in Gwang-Joo in 2008. The Undergroundartchannel based on the online space www.undergroundartchannel.net and the offline space Red Video which was opened in OFF℃, 2008 seeks the possibility of experimental audio-visual language through various projects experimenting the communication among artists, media and citizens.

▷ This work is the collection and installation of the impromptu video clips made in the project space. During the time of exhibit, the dynamic images and sounds  are changed into realtime and the space undergoes a transfiguration. The impromptu audovisual performance using the collected clips will be showed in the opening and the end of exhibit. This is recorded again by the camera and with one realtime cinema, the project becomes complete. Finally, One DVD will be produced as the result of this work.

▷ The artist puts together contradicting relationship in the real world which is connected just like Möbius strip and its meanings by creating new relationships. Here he asks us to perceive the message of disappearance through the various encouraging experiences, and not through fixed and visible objects.

▷ The multi-performance duo, Boochoolaamaa, shows a kind of music that is not bound within a specified art genre, using the violin for children and other folk instruments collected from various places. ▷ This work studies how art and man communicate through the process of setting an object, examining trauma, and creating an image of the world we desire.
